today, but it portends a bigger fundamental shift that has just had to happen in the romney/ryan campaign. now, over and over and over again on this campaign, on issues big and small, the romney/ryan campaign before today has been able to use one particular technique to escape the consequences of having unpopular policy ideas or policy ideas they don't particularly want to defend. they do this same thing over and over again, and usually, it works for them. here's the pattern. here's the pattern they have established. here's mitt romney back in august telling scott pelly of "06 minutes" that he believes abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. seriously? mitt romney thinks abortion is okay if a woman's health is in danger? no, not really. his campaign later said, no, never mind what mitt romney just said. he does not believe abortion should be allowed to protect a woman's health. okay. then in september, here was mitt romney telling david gregory on "meet the press" that he's not going to repeal all of obama care. he says he will keep part of obama care. but th

not even help you very much at all. but after the big bump in the polls that mitt romney got after his dominate performance in the first presidential debate this year, all eyes right now are on whether last night's debate win by president obama will similarly move the needle. we are three weeks out from election day. but people are voting now, right? people are voting early and by absentee ballot, across the country, including in the swing states. and the early word is pretty good for the president. i mean, every snap poll taken after last night's debate showed president obama as the winner of the debate. the polling outfit ppp even did a swing state specific snap poll in colorado. ppp is generally seen as a slightly democratic leaning firm, but their sample for their colorado voters watching the debate last night actually skewed a little bit conservative. and those colorado voters overall thought president obama won. even better for the obama campaign, the margin of victory for the president was particularly large among the independents who were watching that debate. which is exactly

is that mr. romney doesn't like to do stuff the morning after big events. at least, they don't like to have big, public events planned for mr. romney after big events. i mean, traditionally, candidates see, and campaigns see big marquis events like debates or conventions as springboards for the next day's public attention and momentum. but the romney campaign is not like that. after his convention, mr. romney did not do a traditional bus tour or barn storming campaign trip. after his convention, you will recall that mr. romney went on vacation. mr. romney, even after he had such a big win at the first presidential debate, he did not have any big, morning after the debate rallies or anything. he went and did an event that was off his public schedule, but nobody knew for sure he would be anywhere, and there wasn't a big crowd of people around him while he was rallying the troops to his big win. it was a very quiet morning. and then again today, after the second presidential debate, mr. romney did no public events in the morning. i mean, i don't know if it means anything important, but it is a

by the republican challenger mitt romney and lost very much by president obama. but yesterday in santa barbara, i told this giant room full of people in this theater when asked about this subject that as clearly and as cleanly as mr. romney won the the debate, it still seems politically important that mr. romney did not win the debate in a way that produced a single sound byte. i mean, yeah, 60 million people watched romney win the debate overall, but for the 240 or so million american who is did not watch the debate who might have been curious about how it went, there was no single sound byte to take away from the debate to remember and repeat as the reason that mr. romney won. and so i sat at this event that even though romney won that night, won on debate night, there wasn't any day two story that could explain to people why it was that he won. i said, really, thinking about it, the only line, the single line that survived the debate, the only line that i think anybody can remember from the debate, i said this to a room of 2,000 people. there's one line that everybody can remember from that de

already voted. but the numbers are amazing. president obama leads mitt romney by 28 points among early voters. it should be noted that the romney campaign has been complaining about it and trying to discredit it. today mitt romney's political director released a memo attacking the methodology calling this flawed and untrue. nobody complains about the methodology when they are ahead. the romney folks have only recently stopped complaining about the methodology of all of the polling being done. their complaining stopped when romney started doing better in the polls a couple weeks ago. in terms of the swing states, this is how things look. president obama in pennsylvania with a 4-point lead. the president down three points in just the span of a couple weeks. in ohio president obama up by 5 points in a poll released over the weekend. in florida it's mitt romney up by 1 point in north carolina. in virginia romney by 1 point. in iowa the latest poll shows the race to be tied. a new "usa today" gallup poll of the swing states shows mitt romney with an overall 4-point lead in the swing states

american knows, this is what to expect if mitt romney was to become the president, unfortunately. >> mr. gerard, united steelworkers international president, good to have you with us tonight on this story. thanks so much. that's "the ed show." i'm ed schultz. "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. good evening, rachel. >> good evening and thank you very much. thanks for staying with us for this hour. >>> last night on this show, i was talking about the state of ohio during a segment in which i was also talking about the state of iowa and my brain somehow combined them and i ended up christening a new place in america called ohioa. and all day long, i have been doing that now. and i'm worried i may have accidentally rewired my brain, so that ohioa is the only thing i can say whenever i try to say either ohio or iowa. i now have a whole set of new words i have to say very slowly. in this case, to avoid saying, accidentally, ohioa. vice president joe biden has the same kind of problem today on the campaign trail. >> ladies and gentlemen, this is a guy who's running all the ads h

. that was explosive tape, not at all. last month it was the drudge report, which means the romney c campaign, it was them again dousing themselves in gasoline and pulling the fire alarm as what was hyped as outrageous video of president obama saying he believes in redistribution. specifically it was that he believes essentially in the progressive tax code that we have had in this country for a time period that's more easily measured in centuries than in individual years. again, not exactly a bomb shell. now they are dousing themselves in gasoline and hitting the fire alarm all over again over a video of president obama speaking as a candidate in 2007. in this video, which the right is very excited about tonight but which has been available online since 2007, mr. obama, then a candidate, acknowledges the presence in the room of his former pastor from chicago, reverend jeremiah wright. steve smith was part of the strategic team in 2008 when they decided that they would not attack barack obama based on his pastor. but this is a different year and it is telling that the right thinks what will un

happened last night. when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that debate the g

governor romney. >> i did. >> are you in contact with him all the time? >> yes. >> what do you talk about? >> in general. he has a stance on china, which is a country that is ripping our heart out. we do nothing to protect ourselves, that i really like. >> where were these made? >> i don't know where they were made. but they are great. it's ties, shirts, cuff links. sold at macy's and they are doing great. >> where are the ties made? >> the ties are made in where? china. the ties are made in china. >> that look on donald trump's face is worth a million gold plated towers. that's worth the price of whatever impulse you have towards your fellow human being donald trump. whatever price you pay in empathetic shame just for the pleasure of seeing his actual shame at having that issue resolved that way on national tv. to be satisfied with seeing this lie of his unravelled. because it is a kind of lie to make it seem like you're the guy who would be super tough on china in business terms and economic terms. you're the guy who would stop china from ripping america's heart out while you're the guy

that was unmediated that brings us together as a country. this past july, mitt romney made the first visit of any candidate to the great totally nonswing state of montana. montana has a close senate state, but for president, montana is not hotly contested. so the candidates would usually stay out of a state like that except when they had to be there to raise money. that's when mitt romney was doing in july. at that fundraiser, mitt romney recounted an anecdote from his business career and related that to the presidency of ronald reagan. he told the donors at the event he had three rules when he ran bain capital. the first rule was focus. the second rule was focus. and the third rule was focus. then mr. romney pulled out this presidential historical anecdote to illustrate what he said he meant by that kind of focus. here's how mr. romney's remarks were quoted in the press report that day. the idea was put all your energy and passion at the job all the hand. i heard from secretary jim baker just a couple weeks ago. he said in the first hundred days of the reagan presidency, we had a national securi

. >>> when republican presidential romney mitt romney at last night's al smith dinner made one of his jokes about president obama, that was also sort of an implicitly a shot at the first lady. the first lady herself was not in the room. mr. romney was there with his wife, ann romney, but the president was there without the first lady. michelle obama was not in the room. i think that is what made mr. romney's joke more awkward than it otherwise might have been. >> campaigns can be grueling, exhausting. president obama and i are each very lucky to have one person who is always in our corner, someone who we can lean on and someone who is a comforting presence without whom we wouldn't be able to go another day. i have my beautiful wife, ann, he has bill clinton. >> which is a funny joke, but he's also a little bit mean to the first lady, right? mr. romney did go on at the end of his remarks to say very nice things, very nice and serious things about the whole obama family. that sort of softened the blow there a little bit. michelle obama was also the subject of a self-deprecating joke from pres

at hofstra. we're two nights after the presidential debate. barack obama and mitt romney will be speaking there tonight. we'll carry them live and uninterrupted unless the interruption is from chris matthews, directly behind the president. he could spill a drink on him. if he does something to interrupt the proceedings, we'll interrupt everything. other than that, we will bring you president obama and mitt romney, you can see there on the right side of your screen along with his wife. we'll bring you those remarks as they deliver them. for what might be a preview of the president tonight, here is how then-candidate barack obama did in 2008. that same night with john mccain. >> there is no other crowd in america that i'd rather be palling around with right now. john mccain is on to something. there was a point in my life when i started palling around with a pretty ugly crowd. i've got to be honest. these guys were serious deadbeats. they were low lives. they were unrepentant. no good punks. that's right. i've been a member of the u.s. senate. some of the rumors out there are getting a bit

can relax into and wash over you? here you go. >> you endorsed governor romney. >> i did. >> are you in contact with him all the time? >> yes. >> what do you talk about? >> just general. i tell you what, he has a stance on china, which is a country that is ripping our heart out. we do nothing to protect ourselves, that i really like. >> where were these made? >> i don't know where they were made. but they were made some plays. but they're great. it's ties, shirts, cuff links. everything sold at macy's and they're doing great. number one selling tie anywhere in the world. >> these are beautiful ties. >> where are the ties made? the ties are made in china? the ties are made in china. >> that look on donald trump's face is worth a million gold plated midtown office towers. that's worth the price of whatever empathetic impulse you have toward your fellow human being donald trump. whatever price you pay in empathetic shame just for the pleasure of seeing his actual shame at having that issue resolved that way on national tv. you do not have to dislike donald trump as a person to be satisf

a little bit mean to the first lady, right? mr. romney did go on at the end of his remarks to say very nice things, very nice and serious things about the whole obama family. that sort of softened the blow there a little bit. michelle obama was also the subject of a self-deprecating joke from president obama, himself. >> tomorrow it's back to campaigning. i've been to cities and towns across our great country, and i hear the same thing everywhere i go. honestly, we were hoping to see michelle. >> that was not president obama's funniest joke of the night, but it turns out that what he said there is actually kind of true. at least the underlying point of it, which is that people apparently really, really like to see michelle obama out on the campaign trail. this is mrs. obama today speaking at a campaign rally in racine, wisconsin. there were something like 2,500 people, capacity crowd crammed in to see mrs. obama. we know it was a capacity crowd because there was also a line of people several blocks long outside who were trying to get in to see her but who could not get into the room. so whe

. nothing for you. can't afford medicine? tough luck. it's america. maybe governor romney didn't look like an outsourcer on the stage last week, but that's a big part of how he made his millions. workers are at the mercy of business owners. teachers are at the mercy of administrators. romney will deregulate water, air, the workplace, food, oil, banks, wall street, he told us that he wants to get rid of teachers, cops, firefighters or what he calls government workers. that's mitt romney's america. george w. bush's policies on steroids. now ask yourself the question, americans. can you get fooled again? we're a month away. think about it. that's "the ed show." i'm ed shultz. the "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. >> good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with us this hour. there was this moment in 2008 on election night that year. i know you were watching our coverage here on msnbc, but on election night in 2008 over on the fox news channel, carl rove in the middle of fox's election night coverage was on tv gaming out john mccain's chances of pulling out

for counterbalance. the romney campaign's counterbalance tonight to them losing the colin powell endorsement this year is a whole different kind of counterbalance. >> you want to call me crazy, go to hell. call me crazy all you want. >> this morning, on cbs, republican former secretary of state colin powell officially endorsed barack obama. that's on one side of the race today. on the other side of the race today, well, tonight actually, as we speak, the romney campaign is hosting a gala fund-raiser in texas with former vice president dick cheney and this guy. >> tonight, it's big boy time. tonight is not an episode that you casually watch and take out of context. tonight you must consider the unthinkable. this is the jesus side. this is what's in the book of revelation of the antichrist. i did this five years ago and about wet my pants when i did the research on this. we're going to take a break. wait until you get to the mark of the beast, next. capitalist, if you think you can play footsies with these people, you're wrong. they will come for you and drag you into the streets and kill you.

to dance lessons for god's sake. and this is mitt romney's way of making money. >> and no doubt about it. >> america has to see this, ed. america has to see this. this can't be the america we're heading to. we have to stop this from happening. >> we will continue to stay on this story. leo gerard of the steelworkers. again, a nonunion shop in freeport, illinois. the union is just speaking up for these workers. that's "the ed show." i'm ed schultz. "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. good evening, rachel. great job quarterbacking the show last night. i used to be a quarterback, but i'm just your offensive lineman right now. i kind of -- i really do enjoy that, by the way. >> ed, there is nothing offensive about you anymore. thank you. it was a great night. i am so looking forward to tuesday, i can hardly stand it. usually i look forward to the weekend. now i just can't help but look forward to the next debate. >> i hear you. great job. have a great weekend. >> thanks, man, you, too. thanks to you at home as well for staying with us for the next hour. we do have to start tonight wit

the list goes on and on and on. so when i hear mitt romney say that he understands this economy, the only thing he understands is kicking workers to the side of the road and turning them into road kill and taking the money and going out the back door. and, oh, by the way, having the money planted overseas. ask yourself the question, is this the economy you want in america? that's "the ed show." i'm ed schultz. "the rachel maddow show" starts right now. >>> good evening, ed. amazing show tonight. amazing. thanks to you at home for staying with us for the next hour. in the last presidential campaign in 2008 when colin powell stopped holding his cards close to his vest, and decided to make his endorsement in the presidential race between barack obama and john mccain that year, colin powell choosing obama for his endorsement was pretty much the last thing in the world the mccain campaign needed to hear. at that point, they were already becoming a really evident long shot. the race was starting to increasingly look like it wasn't even going to be close. and the colin powell endorseme

in ohio with vice president biden. the republican challenger mitt romney cancelled one of three campaign events on his schedule today. he did still address crowds in ohio and davenport, iowa. he held a town hall with voters in ohio by teleconference. but now romney's slate of events for tomorrow has been cleared. mr. romney's running mate paul ryan held one event in florida before cutting the day short and heading to his home in wisconsin. in terms of hurricane sandy's direct effect on next week's election, chuck todd reports tonight that the fema director craig foou gait has told states if they incur extra costs because of the storm, if they have to move polling places or bring in generators for power, should sandy cause elections officials any expensive changes, states and cities will be reimbursed for those costs by the federal disaster relief, ev if one doesn't believe in that sort of thing. this is not a time for ideology. let's bring in michelle franzen in battery park in lower manhattan. everybody has been keeping an eye on the storm surge and wondering how high the water is going

-- >> careful. oh, yeah. >> i didn't see that. >> that was mitt romney and paul ryan earlier today on an airport tarmac in columbus, ohio. pointing at something, and ixnaying any talking about the abate day because of that icrophone nay. what they were pointing at there. what mitt romney was alerting paul ryan to there, a suspicious looking boom mike hovering up above that was capturing what mitt ryan -- mitt ryan? what mitt romney and paul ryan were saying. the point where mr. romney interrupted mr. ryan was when he said, you know, he was just acting so -- and romney jumped in, careful. careful. ixnay on the talking. at his first post-debate appearance today in wisconsin, vice president joe biden took the final topic of last night's debate, issue of abortion rights and hit paul ryan with it pretty forcefully. >> if anyone had a doubt about what's at stake in this election, when it comes to women's rights, and the supreme court, i'm sure they were settled last night. it was made clear last night that they don't believe in protecting a woman's access to health care. it was made very clear that th

who they supported. if the answer was mitt romney, he was supposed to sign them up. if not, well, then not. in virginia after the republican firm campusers were fishing for voters, one official felt compelled to remind them that you can't throw out forms because you do not like the party registration of the voter. the reason it's illegal in lots of states to pay canvassers per registration is it creates an inent sieve to make up fake people that register to vote so they can get paid for those registrations. it's a form of fraud and it's a bad thing, but it doesn't necessarily affect any election outcomes because those are fake people. and those fake people don't exist in the real world so they are not going to show up and vote. the actual thing is if you do get real people to fill out real forms and they therefore, believe they are registered and then because you don't like their party affiliation, you tear it up and then that real person thinks they have registered, show up on election day only to find out they are not on the rolls and not allowed to vote. after the reports in t

closer than it seems. colorado is going to be really hard fought. maybe mitt romney ha a hard time in the primaries in 2012. he did great in 2008. people will remember him. half of what the colorado party has spent on this election it's spent on that voter registration contract with this bogus company that's now been fired and can do no work in the last home stretch of the campaign. there's a basic competence issue in terms of what it means to run a party here. i feel like the rank and file voters must be -- but they must be enraged. >> you have seen some real money management issues. remember all the stories that mitt romney was going to outspend barack obama by vast sums of money. and then we learned that the campaign didn't have quite as much money as we thought they had. and so maybe it's about competence. >> e. jesj., let me ask you onee question. you saw ed shultz broadcasting from denver tonight. i'm jealous he's having a post-show party in a bar with people. the romney campaign is telegraphing they need to have a clean win, that they need to absolutely turn the momentum aro

the polls were particularly dire for the republican presidential candidate mitt romney in the election, presidential election polling this past month conservatives decided these polls showing an american electorate that is choosing president obama over mitt romney, these polls made them feel so uncomfortable they decided to develop a new fantasy electorate that they would poll in theory and their fantasy electorate which is not the real electorate would give them a much more comforting list of results in terms of their fake polls. it was the same dynamic at work when they invented conservative-a-pedia. something you read about the world on wikipedia, if it makes you uncomfortable as a conservative, conservative-a-pedia is guaranteed to only contain information that makes you feel okay. if you are discomfited by the idea the human species is a result of millenia of evolution for example conserve-a-pedia has you covered. not only has it been debunked by the obvious fact that humans and dinosaurs co-existed, but in fact according to conserve-a-pedia dinosaurs are actually still here and h

watching him act on it now in realtime. in this crisis he has faced as president. mitt romney has argued that he essentially doesn't want a federal government role in disaster response. he made these rorks on the subject at a debate last year saying not only should we get rid of federal disaster response but it should be taken over by private business. >> every time you have an occasion that takes something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that's the right direction. if you can go further and send it back to the private sector, that's even better. instead of thinking in the federal budget what we should cut, we should ask the opposite. what should we keep? we should take all of what we're doing at the federal level and say what are the things we're doing that we don't have to do and those things we have to stop doing. we're borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we're taking in. >> including disaster relief. >> we can't afford to do those things without jeopardizing the future for our kids. it's simply immoral in my view. for us to continue to rack up larg
